Position Overview
The Sourcing & Commodity Buyer is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies that support the company’s manufacturing operations across North America. This role manages supplier relationships, negotiates commercial agreements, and ensures the timely procurement of materials, components, tooling, equipment, and MRO supplies.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting program launches, driving cost reduction initiatives, and strengthening the supply chain to ensure operational excellence and competitiveness. This position requires strong negotiation skills, a solid understanding of cost structures, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including Program Management, Engineering, Quality, and Operations.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Sourcing
  • Lead sourcing activities for materials, components, tooling, equipment, and MRO supplies supporting North American manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborate with Program Management, Engineering, and Operations teams during RFQ processes to identify optimal sourcing solutions.
  • Conduct supplier evaluations and select suppliers based on cost, quality, delivery performance, and technical capabilities.
  • Develop and execute sourcing strategies aligned with company objectives and program timelines.
Supplier Management & Negotiation
  • Lead commercial negotiations including pricing, contracts, payment terms, and long-term agreements.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers to ensure supply continuity and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor supplier performance through KPIs and drive corrective actions when necessary.
Cost Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Support cost reduction initiatives and value engineering activities across programs and commodities.
  • Analyze supplier cost structures and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Achieve year-over-year cost savings through effective negotiation and sourcing strategies.
Purchasing Operations
  • Manage purchasing activities including Purchase Order (PO) issuance and maintenance, blanket orders, spot buys, procurement documentation, and contract administration.
  • Ensure timely procurement of materials and services required for production and operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company purchasing policies and procedures.
Supply Chain Risk Management
  • Identify potential risks in the supply chain and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Support successful program launches by ensuring supplier readiness and material availability.
  • Work with Quality and Engineering teams to resolve supplier-related issues.
Process & Systems Improvement
  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of purchasing processes, including sourcing reviews, supplier approval processes, supplier performance management, and standardized procurement documentation.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • On-time completion of RFQ and sourcing activities
  • Successful supplier readiness for program launches
  • Supplier performance score
  • Year-over-year cost savings and cost avoidance
  • Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams and global purchasing organizations
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related discipline
  • CIPS or CPP certification is considered an asset
Experience
  • Minimum 5+ years of purchasing or sourcing experience in automotive manufacturing, industrial manufacturing, tooling, or component sourcing
  • Experience supporting program launches and RFQ processes is preferred
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong negotiation and supplier relationship management skills
  • Good understanding of automotive supply chain and cost structures
  • Knowledge of contracts, commercial terms, and procurement regulations
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities
