Position Summary
The Controls Engineer will design, implement, and optimize control systems for a wide range of manufacturing equipment, including metal-forming, fabrication, finishing processes and assembly. This role combines technical expertise with hands-on troubleshooting to ensure machinery operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 standards. Collaborating with contractors, maintenance teams, and production personnel, the Controls Engineer is a critical player in driving continuous improvement and operational excellence.Key Responsibilities
System Design & Programming
- Design and program control systems, including PLCs and associated automation equipment.
- Lead the integration and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring compatibility and performance.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Maintain and troubleshoot control systems to minimize downtime and ensure reliability.
- Provide hands-on support for diagnostics and repairs on manufacturing equipment including PLC programming, robot programming, vision systems, sensors, 24V wiring, etc.
Optimization & Continuous Improvement
- Standardize control platforms and implement improvements to enhance productivity and system efficiency.
- Analyze performance data to identify opportunities for process enhancements.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all systems meet IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 standards, incorporating safety features into designs.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or Technologist diploma in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
- 5–7 years of experience in controls engineering within the automotive manufacturing industry.
- Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting Siemens TIA Portal and Allen-Bradley platforms.
- Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting robotic platforms.
- Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting machine vision systems.
- Proficiency in configuring, tuning and troubleshooting servo drives and motion control systems.
- Hands-on experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and automation systems for diverse manufacturing equipment.
- Must be able to interact effectively with other team members.
- Must be able to work weekday/weekend overtime with a minimum amount of supervision in order to meet customer requirements.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Achieve and maintain OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) above 85% on all equipment.
- Achieve and maintain FTT (First Time Through) >95% on all equipment.
- Continuous Improvement: Support plant initiatives to reach plant goals.
Equipment and/or Product Familiarity
Assembly cells, PC, printer, label maker, robots, pumps, compressors, servo press, cutters and grinders etc. Microsoft Office and internal databases and software, etc.Responsibilities and Working Conditions
Under the general direction of the ME Supervisor, the Controls Engineer works independently and confers regularly with division and corporate employees, contractors, customers, and suppliers. Travel and overtime may be required to meet customer expectations. A valid driver’s license and passport are required for travel. The Controls Engineer works in a manufacturing plant environment and will be exposed to some elements such as temperature and noise.Reporting and Employment Status
